For Educators

In our 20+ years serving Louisiana students (along with more than a few of our neighbors from Arkansas and Texas), we’ve seen close to 1,000,000 school group visitors come through our doors! Sci-Port Discovery Center has outlasted several generations of registration and ticketing software, making exact numbers are hard to track.

Sci-port has also outlasted numerous generations of science standards. Like most veteran teachers, recent changes to Louisiana Student Standards for Science initially left us scratching our heads. We have long been proponents of the sort of Three Dimensional strategies at the heart of the new standards. But like most educators, shifting content requirements have forced us to take a long, hard look at our program offerings to ensure that our informal science learning experiences continue to meet the needs of teachers and students. While we hope that our revised Program Catalog helps you fulfill your curricular needs, we are always eager to hear from you with suggestions! Don’t forget that our partner schools and classes, in addition to enjoying unlimited visits and other perks, can ask us to develop special programs specifically tailored to meet their needs.

Our Program offerings are only one of the ways we help deliver content to your students. Our exhibit spaces offer the practical, anchoring experiences that can serve to inspire your students before a new unit, reinforce learning after a unit, review material through a fresh perspective or simply reward kids for a job well done. Similarly, a well-chosen film in our IMAX® Dome Theatre can provide educational value beyond simply supplying content knowledge. Remember: in addition to our regularly scheduled films, school groups with as few as 50 students can choose from any of the offerings in our IMAX® library. Among other options, you can swim with Dolphins, take a journey into Amazing Caves, or experience Hurricane Katrina in Hurricane on the Bayou.

As before, the Power of Play (POP) Children’s Museum remains an option for early childhood educators, whether you want to visit only POP or combine that visit with an IMAX® film or programming in the LSSC (Louisiana's Science and Space Center). We truly believe in the awesome power of play and believe that the type of informal learning opportunities POP offers to children ages 8 and under are crucial to the development both of tomorrow’s active learners and a vibrant future workforce. From exploring a farm to caring for pets at the vet, kids will spark their curiosity and discover fun at POP. This year, you also have a choice of programming, in case you want a more structured visit to POP.

If you are unsure how to best fold a visit to Sci-Port in with your curriculum or how to get the most out of your visit, our educator team is always eager to help. Give us a call, or schedule a visit and personalized tour.

As always, we value your feedback. Let us know how your visit experience was in our post-visit survey, and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
We look forward to serving you and your students this year!
